Kamala Harris
Kamala Devi Harris, born on the 20th of October 1964, is a prominent American politician and lawyer. She is currently the 49th vice president of the United States. She is the first woman to hold the vice presidency and the highest-ranking female politician in U.S history. As a member of the Democratic Party, she was the attorney general for California in 2011-2017 and she was a United States senator representing California from 2017 to 2021. Harris was born in Oakland, California. She graduated from Howard University as well as the University of California Hastings College of the Law. Following her first job as an Alameda County District Attorney, Harris was hired to the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. Later she became the City Attorney of San Francisco. She was elected San Francisco district attorney in 2003. In 2010 she was elected Attorney General of California and re-elected in 2014. Harris served as the junior United States Senator from California between 2017 and 2021. Harris defeated Loretta Sanchez to become the 2nd African American woman senator and the first South Asian American ever to be elected to the United States Senate. She was a senator and was a vocal advocate for reforms to healthcare and federal cannabis de-scheduling. She also advocated for a pathway to citizenship for immigrants who are not legally documented, the DREAM Act, a ban against assault weapons and progressive tax reform. She was praised nationally for her provocative examination of Trump administration officials during Senate hearings, including Trump's second Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and was accused of assault on a woman.
